About HSIA

HSIA's mission --

To represent the interests of users and producers of chlorinated solvents
To promote the continued safe use of  these products
To promote the use of sound science in assessing their potential health effects

The Halogenated Solvents Industry Alliance, Inc. (HSIA) was formed in 1980 by a group of executives in the chlorinated solvents industry to meet the growing challenges of government regulation. HSIA is dedicated to serving the interests of the halogenated solvents industry - interests that include solvent equipment manufacturers, and producers, distributors, and commercial users of halogenated solvents.  Our success since 1980 is the result of the active support and participation of companies in the halogenated solvents industry. By working together, the halogenated solvents industry and HSIA can both protect industry interests and promote the safe and responsible use of chlorinated solvents.

From its office in Washington, D.C., HSIA represents companies that manufacture, distribute, and use:

Methylene chloride
Perchloroethylene (Perc)
Trichloroethylene (Tri)
Other halogenated compounds

HSIA places great emphasis on staying ahead of and actively participating in the decision-making process. The staff collect and analyze information about the halogenated solvents and government plans and activities relating to them, and relay that information to HSIA board and committee members.

HSIA has three committees that meet four times each year. It is through these committees that HSIA does the bulk of its work. The committees are the Health & Science, Regulatory Affairs, and Stewardship & Outreach Committees.

Health & Science

Sponsor scientific research on the health and environmental effects of the chlorinated solvents
Promote toxicological and epidemiological research by other organizations relevant to these solvents
Support advances in risk assessment methodology employed by regulatory agencies

Regulatory Affairs

Monitor international, federal, state, and local legislative and regulatory activities
Provide information and comment to legislative bodies and regulatory agencies
Represent the industry in challenges to regulations where appropriate

Stewardship & Outreach

Promote safe and effective use of chlorinated solvents
Offer technical information to users
Publish a bimonthly newsletter, information white papers, and educational materials

International  (Europe & Japan)

HSIA communicates with the European Chlorinated Solvent Association (ECSA), and the Japan Association for Hygiene of Chlorinated Solvents (JAHCS). The European Chlorinated Solvent Association was formed over 25 years ago by the leading chlorinated solvent manufacturers in Europe. Like HSIA, the goals of ECSA and JAHCS are to support safe use of chlorinated solvents and to encourage balanced regulation.
